EPDM (ethylene propylene diene terpolymer) is a roofing product designed specifically for commercial roofing systems. The base product in an EPDM roofing system is synthetic rubber. It comes in black or white and ranges in width anywhere from 7.5’ to 50’. EPDM roofing systems come in two thicknesses: 45 mils and 60 mils. It is seamed with 3” or 6” tape. EPDM systems have a poor chemical resistance, become moderately slippery when wet, and have a moderate impact on the environment.
Did You Know? EPDM systems actually heat the roofs on which they are applied. This reaction has both positive and negative effects. In the plus column, EPDM systems can actually melt small amounts of snow if the EPDM is exposed. But because EPDM creates a hot environment, it’s not ideal for rooftop equipment, which if overheated can be critical to its demand and operating costs.
EPDM has the roofing industry’s longest average service life. Characteristics that contribute to this superior overall system performance include:
- Tear, puncture, impact and foot traffic resistant
- Hail resistant
- Wind damage resistant
- High resistance to ozone, weathering and abrasion
- Can accommodate structural movement
- Pliable in a wide range of fluctuating temperatures
- Superior resistance to extreme heat and fire
- Thermal shock durability
- Ultraviolet radiation resistant
